Sunday 19th July 2026 - Moving Day (aka Adventure Day)
Check out of the Glam Hotel. It's just a short walk to Milan Centrale where we bought our tickets. We decided on trains only to Tirano, rather than having to use a bus. First stop, Girabaldi Station. The lift was boarded up, so it was a lift and carry our luggage down the stairs. It's a forty minute wait until the platform for our train to Lecco was announced.

All of a sudden, there's a rush to platform 5. Are they all going our way??? You betcha. A small train, we were lucky to squeeze on with 4 suitcases and a bike bag. We departed late and it got later and later. Every stop involved a crowd wanting to get on, a few managing to do it but others running up and down looking for room. After a couple of minutes the train would depart.
Sunday and hot weather, Lake Como was an irresistable attraction. Those with a cooler of beer and a chair or umbrella had NO chance of getting on.
Midday way through the trip, the train stopped, the lights went out. Then, an annoucemment in Italian, followed by a large groan. I enquired in English if anyone knows what's happening. "Everybody off so we can check the train." Crowds, sweat and heat as we stood outside the train. After 5 minutes poeple started filing back on. Then we took off again. Our scheduled 90 minute train trip, turned into a 2h30m trip.
In Lecco, an hour delay doesn't make much difference when the next train departs every hour. In fact, it meant we could then catch an express bus from Tirano to Bormio. That will get back 30mins of what we've lost. Lecco to Tirano - on time.
There's a long line for the bus but we go on. The driver opened the luggage doors and left us to put the 4 suitcases and bike box on board. Sadly, despite multiple attempts to pack them in, they would not fit. The thinking process was not helped by the bus driver honking the horn every 20 seconds. Eventually, she came out of the bus, dragged the bike box around the other side and loaded it into the bus. A little late, but on our way. We might still get back some time.
We were most of the way through the third tunnel, when we stopped. And there we stayed. Getting later. The red triangles came out. Signalling something terminal and permanent. Lateness.
A replacement bus arrived, we were loaded up and off we went. A 45m trip turned into a 1h40m adventure. Daniella came and rescued us from the bus station. Bormio at last. What an adventure!!
