WWI Flanders Fields

After looking through the Menin Gate, we moved out into the surrounding country.  There are many cemeteries and memorials to the Australians and other Commonwealth Forces who perished here.
The New Irish Farm - named after an Irish regiment that was stationed here.
Buttes New British Cemetery. These cemeteries are maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
On the way home we passed through Passchendaele, where 500,000 men died in fighting in horrific conditions.  And then visited Tyne Cot, the largest cemetery for Commonwealth forces in the world.  Almost 12,000 are buried here. Most of them are unnamed.  There are also 35,000 names on the surrounding walls of the Missing.

A special day of respect to those who gave everything.

Hi David, great to read your blogs about history, and know you're in Belgium. Guess you're looking forward to a certain lady arriving in a few days! Ride carefully!
